Flu Season 2026: When to Get Your Shot and What’s Different This Year

Cooler mornings mean one thing on top of sweater weather: flu season is back on the calendar. Health officials are once again urging Americans not to wait until the office starts coughing to think about a shot.

Why Timing Matters

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for full protection to kick in, which is why late September through October is generally considered the sweet spot. Get it too early, in July say, and protection may start fading before flu activity even peaks in the dead of winter. Get it too late, and you’re rolling the dice during the exact weeks infection rates climb fastest.

Who Should Prioritize It

Everyone six months and older is generally encouraged to get vaccinated, but a few groups carry extra risk if they skip it: adults over 65, young children, pregnant women, and anyone managing a chronic condition like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. If that’s you or someone in your household, this isn’t the year to put it off.

Where to Get It

Most pharmacies, from big chains to your neighborhood drugstore, offer walk-in flu shots with no appointment necessary in many cases. Many insurance plans cover the cost fully, and community health centers typically offer low or no-cost options for anyone uninsured.

A Few Myths Worth Retiring

No, the flu shot cannot give you the flu, it uses an inactivated virus. And no, being “healthy” doesn’t make you immune to a bad flu season, healthy adults get hospitalized every year too. The shot isn’t about being invincible, it’s about lowering your odds and, just as importantly, lowering the odds you pass it along to someone more vulnerable.
