MLB Postseason Picture: Who’s In, Who’s Still Fighting With the Season Winding Down

With the regular season nearly over, most of the National League’s postseason field is already set — but a few American League divisions are still coming down to the wire.

Locked in

The Milwaukee Brewers (98-59) have the best record in baseball and have clinched the NL Central. The Los Angeles Dodgers (97-60) and Atlanta Braves (92-65) have wrapped up the NL West and NL East, respectively. On the American League side, the Tampa Bay Rays (96-61) have clinched the AL East with home-field advantage, while the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have both already secured wild card spots.

Still up for grabs

The AL Central is the tightest race left, with the Cleveland Guardians (82-75) holding a slim one-game edge over the Chicago White Sox (81-76). The AL West is even closer, with the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers dead even at 78-79 apiece, both fighting to avoid a losing season while keeping faint wild card hopes alive.

In the National League, the Chicago Cubs (87-70), Philadelphia Phillies (87-70), and San Diego Padres (87-70) are all tied for the final NL wild card spots, setting up a potential tiebreaker scramble in the season’s closing days.

What to watch

With several teams bunched within a game or two of each other, head-to-head matchups in the final week could decide home-field advantage in the wild card round. Fans in Cleveland, Chicago, Houston, and Texas have the most reason to keep an eye on the scoreboard as the regular season closes out.
